The end of eras

Today 20th May 2013 sees HMS Ark Royal leaving Portsmouth for Turkey where she will be scrapped. Ark was built on the Tyne in 1978 and decommissioned in 2011.

On the same day the Tyne pedestrian tunnel closed for a year for major refurbishment. At the time of construction, the escalators were the longest single-rise escalators in the world, with a vertical rise of 85 ft. (25.9 m) and a length of approximately 200 ft. (60 m). Now beyond economic repair they are to be replaced by ‘inclined lifts’
